Waiting Can Kill You!

Waiting seems to be part of life. We wait in lines at the market or at the movies. We wait about our acceptance into college. And we wait at the doctor's office. And we wait and wait.
Sometimes that wait can be an hour or more. Usually there are no emergencies for that waiting. Another a patient may have been late. Due to insurance and Medicare payments, doctors often overbook appointments to cram in as many patients in a day. These things are common and are a nuisance. These are not life threatening waits.
Here's a waiting story about our guest Michelle Chaffee. Michelle is a healthcare advocate, helping patients navigate our crazy maze of reaching a doctor. Keep in mind that many of Michelle's friends are doctors and other healthcare providers.
After being told she had cancer, Michelle has to wait weeks to see an oncologist. Weeks! What goes through her head are things like is this thing growing fast inside of me? Am I dying? The good news is that Michelle is okay. The waiting for appointments, lab results and even surgery could have killed her. Why do we have to wait so long when the problem is urgent?

Food As Medicine & Summer Time Cravings (Part 1)

Did you know that you could use Food as Medicine? The old saying "You Are What You Eat" has never been truer than it is today. Dr. Keith Kanter, a leading nutritionist and naturopathic physician, says, "Specific food cravings can indicate serious health problems including addiction."

What summer time food cravings indicate and how they affect the brain is what N.A.M.E.D. (Nutritional Addiction Mitigation Eating & Drinking) is all about. Everyone knows that eating a healthy diet makes for a healthier body. Eating healthy also helps people with drug and alcohol addiction recovery by naturally suppressing opiate receptors in the brain.

With nutritional support the N.A.M.E.D. program helps increase the success of addiction recovery while lowering the relapse rate of addicts in recovery. Sugar and gluten stimulate opiate receptors, which increase the craving for abused drugs and alcohol.

The NA.M.E.D. menus are easy to prepare, taste great and feature organic and natural foods. Preparing food using this method can also be less expensive than traditional meals.

Using supplements to enhance the program is also important. Omega 3 fish oil to B-complex and others help to maintain a general healthy lifestyle. Reducing caffeine and getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night is another of the program.

In addition to working with people with addictions, the program also works with patients with mental illness. So now you know that you can use Food as Medicine!  namedprogram.com

When Life Changes on a Dime (Part 1)

Life Changes - Have you noticed every once in a while life kind of gives you a smack on the side of the head. Sometimes it's enough to stun you for a week or even a month. Sometimes it's just a step back for a few hours. Robert Clancy, author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Soul offers advise on how to handle situations that you have no control over.

Life is going great. Business is the best it's ever been. New clients come to you as if by magic. You're not worrying about money. Your kids are fantastic, with super grades. Maybe the kids are on tract to be accepted by an Ivy League school. Your relationship with your soul mate is amazing and so is the sex.

Then it hits! One of your best friends commits suicide! Your biggest client files for bankruptcy owing you three hundred thousand dollars. Your amazing teenager is arrested for drug use. You life has literally changed on a dime.

How you react in these life changes depends a lot on how you prepare for them. You don't have to be paranoid about this. That would take the joy out of life. Joy and happiness (and love) are what life is really all about. How you handle the little and big changes, the unexpected, on your life's roadmap is how you recover.

Hiding in bed for weeks or jumping deeper into work shows what kind of person you really are.

Self Healing -The Power of the Mind (Part 1)

Studies conducted on the mind clearly show we don't know much about how it works. Oh, we understand the physical aspects of the brain. We know the chemical changes and composition of the brain. However, the astounding power of the mind we don't know fully understand. Free spirit and creative guru Liberty Forrest shares how to self healing can be done with your mind.

Albert Einstein's quote "we only use 10% of our mind" makes me think. Imagine what we could do if we used only fifty percent? The idea of a sugar pill curing a disease is something that amazes most people. It's called the placebo effect.

Evidence indicates that 50% of all disease is done by the patient believing he/she will be cured. It's the drugs. It's not the doctor. It's not the surgery. It's believing that the doctor knows what to do and is fixing the problem. The real answer is faith that the patient will be cured.

Self healing goes back to the father of modern medicine. Hippocrates says "physician heal thyself". This is part of his oath that doctors still embrace on becoming a doctor. It's all about the power of the mind and healing yourself.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Ever feel that you're holding the weight of the world on your shoulders? Or perhaps just the stress of everyday life? More than 50 years ago a simple, low-load stretch that releases tightness caused in muscles. It's called Myofascial Release Therapy.

This is not about working the muscles on your face but rather the tightness of the fascia. Fascia are the fibrous connective tissues enclosing a muscle. Kathy Murillo, an occupational therapist and advanced myofascial release practitioner talks about this form of physical therapy on this edition of Late Night Health.

Myofascial release techniques are used to loosen those tight areas on the body that cause pain. Neck, shoulders, arms, lower back and more are areas mostly treated with this form of physical therapy. Practitioners of MRT must be licensed in other healthcare areas such as doctors of chiropractic, massage therapists, sports injury specialists or physical therapists.

MRT is often used in combination with other therapies. The goal is to reduce pain from those stiff and tight areas where movement may be restricted. MRT enhances and increases the effectiveness of the other therapies.

USX Veterans Mount Everest Expedition

Climbing Mount Everest is one of the biggest challenges facing mountain climbers. With 100 mile per hour winds, below freezing temperatures, this is a challenge not many people want to face. It's a challenge that most people could not face.

To bring awareness of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) to the public, a group of American veterans created U.S. Expeditions and Explorations USX (@TeamUSX) non-profit organization. Command Sergeant Major Todd Burnett (retired) co-founder of the organization provides an update on Late Night Health. The organization is designed to help soldiers and other members of the military combat PTSD. The staggering fact is more military personnel have died from suicide due to PTSD than have died in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq

Americans on both sides of the isle salute the members of the team and thank them for their tours of duty. To make a contribution to USX you can reach them at this website address: www.classy.org
